“Mountain Jewess?” I asked.
“Yes, I was born and raised in the Caucasus (Kavkaz) mountains. We have very strong family values and have kept our Jewish traditions for centuries – even when it was challenging.”
“So what brings you to Rostov?” I asked.
“When I lived in Pyatigorsk, I was always involved in the community’s youth club. Once, I was at a youth seminar in Moscow, and I was talking to the youth director from Rostov. He suggested that I meet a boy from there.
“We got married in July.”
“Did you always know that you’d marry a Jew?” I asked.
“It was a never a question. Mountain Jews marry Jews.”
